The front playground is for the Pink and Yellow Rooms. The Blue Room playground is on the side of the school, and the White Room playground is in the back.TOP If you wish to park and walk your child to his/her gate, please do not park along Route 38 before the COS driveway. In addition, there is a NO PARKING beyond the "No Parking" sign along Route 38 in front of the school. It is very difficult for cars exiting COS to see oncoming traffic if people have parked in this area. It is OK to park along Route 38 in front of the school (to the sign) and beyond the driveway along Route 38. If you walk your child up the driveway, please remember to hold your child's hand and stay to the side of the driveway out of the way of the cars. After the first few days of school, we encourage all parents to use the drive up/drop-off process if at all possible to create a safer environment.TOP As outlined in the handbook, the White and Blue Rooms use the first gate in the driveway which leads to the side and back playgrounds, while the Pink and Yellow Rooms use the second gate in the driveway which leads into the front playground. Please keep in mind that morning drop off is a busy time and it is helpful if you have your child un-buckled and ready to be received by the teacher by the time you reach the gate. If your child is having trouble leaving you and exiting the car, please pull up and park and walk your child to the gate. Finally, in order to keep the process flowing as quickly as possible, please do not use the drop off time as a time to socialize with other parents or chat with the teachers. TOP We will be providing all families with two nameplates to be used for pick-up. Please place these plates on the dash-board of your car (on the right-hand side) so that the teachers are able to know who you are. After receiving your child at the appropriate gate, please pull ahead in the driveway to buckle your child into the car. Teachers are not responsible for fastening seatbelts or carseats.TOP If you are picking up your child at 2:30, the procedure is the same as for regular pick-up. Please drive up to the appropriate gate to receive your child. If you are picking up your child at 3:30 or 4:30, please park and enter the school through the gray door on the right-hand side of the building. The enrichment teachers will have your child ready to be picked up inside the building near the enrichment room room on the first floor. TOP All children should have a labeled change of clothes at the school, including underwear and socks. Please put the clothes in a plastic bag, with the child's name on it. A plastic grocery bag works fine for this purpose. Dirty or wet clothes will be sent home to be laundered and returned. Some of the practical life work involves water.TOP All children will need a labeled art smock and a pair of slippers to be left at the school. Polartec, ballet and mocassin styles all seem to work well. Slippers are worn to keep the school clean as possible to eliminate the need for extra shoes during the rainy and winter seasons.TOP Teachers like to have the first few weeks of school to set the tone of their classroom, to explain the work choices, to get to know each other. In October, the special lessons in art, music and French will begin.TOP We highly recommend that you attend the Parent Education Seminars which are held twice each school year, in November and March. Another good way to learn more about the Montessori philosophy is to become involved in the Parent Education Committee. All parents are encouraged and welcome to join. In addition, an excellent book to read on the Montessori approach is Montessori, A Modern Approach, by Paul Polk Lillard.TOP Special snacks are often provided by parents in celebration of holidays, birthdays, or simply to share a baked item with the class. There are a number of children and families with severe food allergies, so it is very important that you label and provide an ingredient list for all special snacks brought to the school. Please schedule all "special snacks" through the teachers in your child's room.TOP There is a lovely tradition among COS families of donating a book to the school in honor of your child's birthday. A special bookplate is placed in each birthday book, noting the child's name, birthday and age. Children love to know the name of children who donated books many years ago. Teachers prepare a "wish list" each year of books that are not currently in the COS library that they would like to use in the classroom. Families who would like to participate in the birthday book tradition may donate one of their child's favorite books, or they may refer to the wish lists. Wish lists are on hand at BookEnds (559 Main St. in Winchester). The BookEnds staff keeps track of which books have already been purchased for the school. As well, BookEnds stocks wish list books for the COS Book Fair, typically held in the fall. TOP The Pink and Yellow Rooms are located on the first floor of the school. The Blue and White Rooms are located on the second floor. TOP Try to ask your child what kind of "work" he or she performed during the day at school. Do not be concerned if a child seems to do one type of work for weeks. Each work area is geared towards letting a child develop a skill set - sensorial, dexterity, musically, spatially, mathematically, linguisticallyand manually. TOP Yes. You will receive a newsletter four times a year during the course of the school year. The newsletter will update you on the happenings of each room and provide details as to upcoming events. TOP
